Yidaki by Frank Thill
These beautiful instruments are hand crafted in Australia's Northeast Arnhemland. Yidaki is the most common name for the didgeridoo in Northeast Arnhemland.
Frank Thill is one of the leading exponents and at the very cutting edge in this new craft. There are only a few craftsmen now producing in this exaggerated style. Frank Thill is a league above the rest in his skill, competency, passion, and conscientiousness.
An important phase of Thill's development was his experience working alongside master yidaki craftsman, Djalu' Gurruwiwi. In 1996, Frank was invited to Arnhem Land and there met Djalu' and his family. It was the start of an apprenticeship in Yolngu craftsmanship and traditional cultural knowledge. Djalu' and Frank have made a lot of didgeridoos together over the years. Frank has been given permission by the elders of this region to make yidaki.
With substantial knowledge, skill and understanding in the techniques of yidaki crafting that is now recognized both internationally and by local Yolngu craftsmen from north-east Arnhem Land, German-born Thill is now crafting yidaki full-time and is a permanent resident of Nhulunbuy, north east Arnhem Land, a testimony to the passion he has for the yidaki.
This Frank Thill Yidaki is almost 7' tall! It is the biggest eucalyptus didgeridoo we have ever seen! It is hand painted by Balpiyangay. Our good friend (and favorite customer) John custom ordered this one from us. He is the proud new owner of this beauty. We miss it already John! But, we know it is going to a great home!
This gnarly beauty is 66" tall with a 2" mouthpiece. It has a 6.25" bell and is in the key of D, first toot is D sharp. This Yidaki has an extremely unique shape making it a true collectors piece. Great harmonic range, easy toots, nice backpressure and a huge bell.
